Out & About

We arrived back home safe and sound on Sunday, October 9th from ‘yet again, our biggest week of the year’!!  This year’s arena display was beautiful, with purple shavings that wowed the cattle on them!  Record cow, exhibitor, and spectator numbers made this year’s event one of the best ever. I would also like to tribute my great staff – Lana, Tami, Karen, Nancie, Jayne and John.  These are the people who make it happen!  They endured... Read More

The show is going great!  The crowd is lively this year and the cows seem even more spectacular than usual.  All 7 of the major dairy breeds are represented at this show.  The various breeds have their ‘show day’, and the culmination of the week is tomorrow, Sat. October 8th at 4pm for the Parade of Champions, at which time the Supreme Champion of the show is chosen.  If you have never been a spectator at this event – it is something... Read More

We are now in the wonderful city of Madison WI – preparing for the big show! Besides Christmas, there is probably no other more celebrated time of the year for farm families, than the County Fair!  It seems that each year, we embrace the same chaos in an effort to get to the fair in good order.  It involves training cattle to lead at the eleventh hour, rummaging through every cotton-pickin drawer in the house for at least one registration paper we can't find, loading the trailer with cattle and tack, and then... I'm slowly learning that the way to actually 'do' some of the things in summer, that you hope to accomplish is to put them on the calendar!  Several weeks ago, our oldest daughter who goes to college in Duluth reminded me of the promise I'd made to get up there this summer!  I grabbed our 'already loaded' family calender, found an open weekend, and plotted our destination:  Duluth, MN...July 22-24.  What a beautiful city with an... Embracing August!  I would have to admit that this month is filled with more ‘hustle and bustle’ around our place than December!  This week is our county fair.  Our yard looks like a parade of sorts with each kid leading their animal in a different direction, cattle trotting to and from the ‘wash rack’, tractors and wagons delivering loads of hay and straw, and my own employees racing around the studio to pack for State Fair.  And just...   The duties of August fill our lives!  This is the month of the year that implores our time and attention for the many events that we have been preparing for since May!  The garden, the crops, and the fair take center stage around our place.  We spent the weekend picking tomatoes, cucumbers, and yes more green beans! Some of the cucumbers were sliced and diced and already eaten, while other were packed into jars and are transforming... Read More

We’re back!!!!!!!! We made the trip to Madison, WI for the 2009 World Dairy Expo – and have journeyed safely back to the farm and studio – YEAH! Another awesome show, another awesome year and good times shared with many old and new acquaintances. Rekindling friendships is a treasure that never gets old. Despite the recession and depressed milk prices – WDE carried on with the normal air of excitement that it always does. My entire... Read More

This blog will be short and sweet! We leave for World Dairy Expo in less than an hour – and I still have 5 hours of work to do!! You would think that after going to this show for 23 years I could learn to plan ahead a little better,... subconsciously I must love the ‘rush’. Harvest is well under way,... we have just a small amount of corn silage left to chop. The crop has yielded quite well,... and the beans aren’t far off. We’ve had... Read More

It’s Sunday, September 13, 8:14am. The sun is shining, the fog is just beginning to lift and as I sit here painting, I hear the milk truck arrive to pick up the milk that has been produced in the last 24 hours. This is a moment in time when I feel blessed. I smile and sit quietly listening to these subtle country pleasures that most people never realize. What is a sleepy Sunday morning for most, is yet another 5am dawning of chores for... Read More

There are so many good things to love this time of year: County and State Fairs, cool nights, sweatshirts and the hint of leaves wanting to change colors! I wish there could be at least 6 months of autumn! AROUND THE STUDIO,... It’s a big mess! We are tore down and are exhibiting at the MN State Fair. Tomorrow we begin the 12 day marathon. We embrace the noise, the dust, the crying children being pushed around in strollers, the people... Read More

One thing that has remained strongly embedded in my heart since childhood, is my fervent love for pumpkins! Each one, uniquely shaped and grown in various shades of oranges, greens and golds – seem to speak their own personality by doing nothing more than just merely sitting there! My fondness for these eccentric looking ‘vegetable creatures’ is spurred on every autumn, not only because of their unique beauty and carefree ability to... Read More

AROUND THE STUDIO,... I promise, promise, promise to have a new painting to show you next week. The delay and anticipation of new work – awaiting completion and yet to be created, is making me crazy! But – when duty calls, I beckon! Me and my tired little mini-van just keeps chasing up and down the road to baseball games, gymnastics, Dr. appointments, and whatever else is penciled on the calender each day. Every summer I begin with a... Read More
