Out & About

Memorial Day weekend is upon us - the official kick-off "camping and grilling weekend" and start to summer! Growing up, camping was not a high priority or 'dreamed about' event for many farm families, including us. I guess that living in the great outdoors every day, living a more peaceful country lifestyle where fresh open air spaces are in high abundance (plus other various farm smells ;) and maybe having a campfire in our own back... In the ag industry, there are many, many great people who work to inform the world about the importance of farming in our lives — in growing produce to feed the world around us, in teaching responsibility and work ethic in families, in promoting the benefits of the dairy industry, and much more. At World Dairy Expo this past year, I had the wonderful opportunity to connect with one of these dairy enthusiasts, Carrie Mess, famously... Read More

The Future Farmers of America, or better know as the FFA, for short, has long been associated as a dynamic youth organization, dressed in blue, designed to provide hands-on learning, development of leadership skills, and educational growth experiences in agriculture and agribusiness production. I am proud to say that I am a former FFAer...and topped off my career by serving as the MN State FFA Secretary back in  – a few years ago.... Read More

Hello Autumn!  What is it about this time of year that just makes me smile!?  It could be the cool evenings, the crunch of leaves below my feet, or the hundreds of shades of orange pumpkins everywhere!  If I had a magic wand, I think I would ‘Abra Cadabra’ 9 months of fall, and the other three seasons would each get a month.  ('Cause, there still is a certain unique excitement about the change of seasons!)  Anyway, I don’t have a magic... This is always a bittersweet time of year for me...the closing of summer and beginning of fall.  My heart beckons the call of cooler nights, Honey Crisp Apples, and the gorgeous autumn colors – but the lingering thoughts of summer sunshine, casual evenings on the front porch, and going to the lake are seemingly all too quickly coming to an end.  Regardless, the traditions of autumn around our place are unwavering, and as sure as the... I did it!  Less than 48 hours ago, I was on the final stretch of walking the Susan G Komen 3-Day, 60-mile race for the cure of breast cancer with my girlfriend and co-walker Suzy Demeester!  What an adventure.  I happily report that we not only walked 60 miles, but embraced the joy and fellowship of 1,400 other walkers, survived camping two nights in a 5’x5’ pink pup tent, saw some of the most beautiful scenic parks and trails in... I don’t know about you, but amongst adjectives that would be used to describe me, ‘athletic’ would probably not make the Top 10 List.   Yet, when I sit and watch the 2012 Olympic Games on some of these summer evenings, I find myself twisting, turning, screaming, and jumping around the living room – like it really matters, as though it might make a difference in their performance.  I love it!  It’s really too bad I’m not an athlete,... Last Monday, Bonnie Mohr Studio turned into a "movie set!" Dan Hoffman, host of KSMQ's "Farm Connections," a television series on PBS, interviewed Val Aarsvold of the Minnesota FFA Foundation, and Bonnie, about the work of FFA (Future Farmers of America) and the FFA piece, "We Live to Share." The segment also focused on Bonnie raising and being a part of a typical "farm family" in this day and age, and her role in contributing to the... Read More

Summer now seems on the slide.  Once the 4th of July has passed, I just can’t help but to feel that summer is half over, and the days seem to be flying by even more quickly now.  Minnesota, like many parts of the country has been unusually hot and muggy.  Outdoor conditions seem remarkably close to 400 degree open oven-door conditions.  It has been a real test to farmers, construction workers, and all those who work in the great... June 20th - the first official day of summer..... and the longest days of the year are upon us – what I wait for every year!  The days are busy, and everyone is scurrying around packing in as much summer fun and as many activities as possible.   We have had an abundance of rain in the past week or so, and it is making for a bumper mosquito crop – they are thick!  On the upside, the flowers, crops, and gardens are robust and growing... Busy painting! It is hard to sit inside on such a lovely, sunny, 70-degree, picture-perfect day, and paint.  But the time draws near – that is my deadline for the two paintings I am working on for the National Holstein Association.  They are of the new true type model cow and bull for their association.  As I have mentioned before, it is like a Ms. America contest, but for cows!  These two paintings measure 36” x 48” each, and I feel...
